As well as my day to day role as a trainee solicitor in Banking and Financial Services Litigation (BFSL), I like to get involved in the wider aspects of life at TLT. During this seat (my second seat, my first was in the Construction team), I have got involved with the TLT running team and organised a fund raising event.
This year, twenty TLTers (Team TLT) signed up to the Bristol 10 km run on Sunday 11 May 2014 to support in order to raise money for HFT; a Bristol based charity who provide support to people with learning disabilities and their families. HFT's services include supported living, residential care and short break services. They empower people to make their own choices including finding a job, building friendships and relationships and taking part in activities. Whilst they are based in Bristol, the work they do is national so the difference they can make is enormous. As well as being a client of the firm, we wanted to make a contribution to this brilliant charity. If you would like to read more about HFT, please visit their website at: http://www.hft.org.uk/.
After a day of concentrating on drafting letters before action to borrowers, instructions to counsel and updating the bank on the current position after a court hearing, I love to go for run around the beautiful Bristol harbour side to relax. One of the great things about being a trainee at TLT is that you are not expected on the average week to work until midnight, bring in your sleeping bag and toothbrush and not leave the office from Monday morning until Friday night! Whether like me you like to relax by going on a long run or if you have another means of relaxation and enjoy social activities during the week, chances are on the average week you will be able to spend your evenings doing the things you enjoy.
So sports kit donned, training began. Numerous team runs were arranged on Monday evening after work and I increased my individual training. This was a great opportunity to meet like minded people from all roles across the firm; I have met colleagues I may not have otherwise have met. I knew I was also supporting a great charity and now had an incentive to run faster and train harder.
I was temporarily distracted from training by a sweeter, less energetic thought… cakes. Now I know running and cakes don't necessarily go together, but this was all about the fund raising for HFT (and the fact that I like to lick the spoon).
I spoke to HR, the building manager and my supervisor about my fund raising idea as I knew that it would time to organise and co-ordinate. Everyone was really supportive and I was able to organise the whole event (with support from colleagues) from the baking to the story on Atlas (our internal website) to coordinating kitchen equipment with the kitchen refreshment staff.
On Friday 2 May 2014, after a week of year end billing like crazy, Team TLT treated the firm and the other residents in the building to a delicious lunchtime cake sale. Team TLT and trainees (which I had that week persuaded/coerced into helping) baked and brought in their goodies to sell. I am pleased to say the spread was something my idol Mary Berry would have been proud of. We raised an incredible £290.20 in a couple of hours and are on our way to meeting our target of £2,500.00. If you would like to support Team TLT, please donate generously using the Justgiving page www.justgiving.com/TLTRunners.
Hopefully see you at the 10 km start line next year.
