Training contracts the TLT way: insight from training principal, Richard Hayllar

A more hands-on kind of training contract

Having worked at a number of firms over the years, I can safely say that exposure and early responsibility are far from just bold claims about our training contracts.

As a trainee at TLT, you definitely won’t find yourself hidden away photocopying or filing. We look for trainees who will go on to become great solicitors, great associates and great partners. As such, we make sure our training contracts provide everything individuals need to learn, thrive and progress.

You’ll gain a wealth of hands-on experience as you run your own cases and work closely with clients, all with close supervision and plenty of support.

Our working environment is open plan and many partners sit next to a trainee – unlike when I was training, there’s no need to knock on doors when you have a question!

Build close relationships with an impressive client list

We pride ourselves on strong client relationships and our trainees work closely with a wide range of interesting organisations, from major banks and large retail businesses to high net-worth individuals.

Joining TLT, you’ll enjoy client contact daily. This could include meetings, presentations, calls and attending trials and events. Our in-depth training programmes are designed to help you develop excellent networking and client skills, as well as learning about all the different areas you’ll work in.

Because of the quality of our training, there’s a high demand for client secondments, so you might also have the chance to spend one of your seats within a client’s legal team. It’s a fantastic development opportunity and I receive many, many glowing reports on trainees from our clients.

We’re going places. Grow with us

I believe one of the reasons our retention rate is so high is that we really encourage trainees to play an active part in our future success.

We have a great culture and ambitious plans for the future, so it’s good to meet potential trainees who share that sense of drive and positivity.

Individuals who are proactive and confident in putting their views forward, as we’re very open to people’s ideas.

Gemma, our Graduate Recruitment Officer, my team of deputy training principals, and I all work hard to make sure trainees are well looked after and supported to do great things here.

Not only do most stay on with us but many progress to become associates and partners – something which I think speaks volumes about the commitment and investment we put into our training contracts.

If this sounds like your kind of training contract we’d love to meet you. Come along and meet us at an event or open day near you.
